No fewer than 13 people perish and ninety-eight injured in train derailment in Mexico.
A fatal train derailment in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite censure from critics regarding the speed and handling of the country's flagship public works projects.
The accident happened on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a route constructed to link the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was designed to offer an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving regional growth in the area.
“We shall thoroughly investigate the cause of this accident,” declared the national leader.
The leader reported that, of the approximately 250 passengers on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in serious condition. The leader added plans to go to Oaxaca to meet those involved.
Major Initiative of Past Leadership
The Interoceanic Train was a signature infrastructure project of the immediate past president, whose time in office concluded the prior year. This project was a hallmark of his administration's strategic agenda for the southern region.
Another multi-billion dollar rail project from that era, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the comprehensive effort to revitalize the economic fortunes of a relatively disadvantaged part of the country.
Building Management and Risks Apprehensions
The construction of both train projects was supervised by the army, marking a notable expansion of its duties in public projects. They were completed at an accelerated speed, defying expectations to be partially inaugurated before the end of that presidency.
However, this rushed timetable had simultaneously raised persistent concerns over construction quality.
- Sunday's derailment was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
- This involves an previous collision this month when a train struck a truck at a railroad crossing.
- The other major rail project has also seen a couple of non-fatal derailments.
Appeals for Audit and Pause
In the aftermath of the catastrophe, the head of a key rival party urged an immediate suspension in the development and management of all comparable projects.
This stoppage was requested until the completion of a thorough technical review. The party emphasized that the tragedy "demands immediate answers."
In reaction, the national leader maintained that the train had been running in total accordance with all safety requirements. Commitments were given that the government would be "diligent" in both the development and management of these national initiatives.
